The flip side of this is someone like my adult stepdaughter from a previous marriage. She keeps returning to abusive scumbags who physically and mentally abuse her, like sometimes 50 times back and forth to the same scumbag. I know another young woman who has returned over and over again to a guy who has beaten the shit out of her for 8 years. And in both cases their kids are seeing this shit. If someone tries to talk to them about it, they’ll cherry pick parts of stuff like this so it means to them “The people who are criticizing me don’t matter. I’m going to go back to this scumbag because that’s what I want and I’ll make this work this time. I’m who I am and I’m not going to let them put me down.” You have to know what’s positive and what’s not and what “criticism” is useful and what is just detracting, negative criticism. Stubbornness and not listening to anyone is not the virtue here. Being driven toward something positive and knowing that no one can stop you from THAT, is what the virtue is here.

I have a tough time being alone now. I went most of my life alone but that sets me up to not be as ambitious. I recently just opened my own gym business. I found the strength through not letting the people in my life down. My business partner, mentor, family, and my ex gf. When you grow up poor you tend to not want too much to be content. I'm okay having a roof over my head and food in my stomach. What motivates me is proving the people that believed in me right that their belief wasn't in vain and proving the people that didn't believe in me such as my parents wrong. If were to have done all this for myself I don't think i would have been able to. I had to find something bigger than myself.
